The purpose of this two day course is to introduce the dental assistant to the placement and finishing of restorative materials used in pediatric restorative dentistry. Technical background information is presented in cavity classification and dental anatomy. The emphasis will be on deciduous teeth. Class I amalgam restorations, class I composite restorations [PRR] and sealants and placement of SSCs are covered in lecture and laboratory exercises. Different types of restorative materials used in pediatric dentistry are studied. Both written and practical examinations are used to measure participant progress. The basic course has been organized for those dental assistants who have limited or no training and/or experience in the placement of restorative materials as well as for the experienced assistant. Additionally, it is limited to those clinics where the ratio of dentists to dental assistants allows the practice of expanded restorative functions. If the newly acquired skills are to become fully developed, the assistant must be able to return to his/her clinic and continue to develop their skills.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Have a better understanding of tooth morphology and structure.
2. Place and finish basic amalgam and composite, glass ionomers, flowable composites restorations and SSCs.
3. Discriminate between what is an acceptable and unacceptable restoration.
4. Understand where help is most needed when doing restorations

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
