Summary:

The purpose for this literature review is:
1. discuss current research and recommendations for
management of type 2 diabetics undergoing oral surgery procedures. This review will focus on the
article “Association between immunological parameters, glycemic control, and postextraction
complications in patients with type 2 diabetes.

2. review dental treatment during pregnancy. We will review a research article that concludes that dental local anesthetic during pregnancy does not represent a major teratogenic risk. Additionally, we will review potential benefits of dental treatment during pregnancy as well as opinions of dentists and physicians on this topic.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

1. _Evaluate current published research on management of diabetic patients.
2. _Identify how diabetes affects a patient’s risk for postextraction complications.
3. _ Assess a patient’s need for antibiotic prophylaxis prior to tooth extraction.
4. Describe current recommendations for dental treatment during pregnancy.
5. Identify barriers to seeking dental care during pregnancy.
6. Describe potential benefits of dental care during pregnancy.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
