This course is a continuation of the “Basic Expanded Functions” course, which is a prerequisite.

All five-cavity classifications/preparations will be covered in lecture and laboratory exercises, including amalgam and composite restorations. Lectures will review and update course participants on dental restorative materials including a discussion of bonding agents. Laboratory exercises will be performed on typodonts beginning with conservative preparations and working up to and including cusp-protected amalgam and incisal angle composite resin restorations. Also, participants will be introduced to the basics of occlusion. The course will require that the participant perform 5 cusp-protecting amalgams [CPAs] and 5 class IV composite restorations back in their clinical setting before receiving her/his certificate.

Polishing systems used in clinic for slow speed handpieces

This course is for 5 students, 3 from Cherokee Nation and 2 from other IHS or tribal dental clinics.

Students will receive CDE credits for their training time during this class, without regard to grades or future certification. Students MUST enter the completion code and complete the training evaluation upon completion of the course to receive CDE credits or to later get certified as an EFDA upon completing post-course requirements. Students must obtain certification as an EFDA within ONE YEAR of completing the course.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Have an understanding of the basic concepts of occlusion as they apply to restorative dentistry.
2. Be able to place and finish complex Class II amalgam restorations and composite restorations involving the incisal angle.
3. Have an understanding of the current state-of-the-art in dentinal bonding agents.
4. Have the ability to discriminate between acceptable and unacceptable restorations

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
