Summary:

During the first trimester of pregnancy, the breasts begin producing colostrum in small amounts, and at the time of the baby’s birth, more colostrum is being produced by the breasts than the baby will need. However, some fear that the baby ‘won’t get enough’ or that the ‘milk won’t come in,’ and want to express colostrum before the baby is born. This session will present information on the collection of colostrum prenatally especially when it is necessary as an alternative to formula when lactogenesis is delayed due to obesity and diabetes.

The recording of the live webinar on 6/11/19 will be available on the Division of Diabetes web site for three years. The live and recorded sessions of our trainings are all available at the following https://www.ihs.gov/diabetes/training/cmece-online-edu/diabetes-online-cme-ce-education/

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1.Describe the safety and efficacy of collecting colostrum prenatally to be used in the immediate postpartum to avoid low blood sugar and dehydration in the newborn.
2.Affect clinical practice to reduce or eliminate the use of formula for breastfeeding mothers with delayed lactogenesis.
3. Clarify the practice of avoiding formula use in the first postpartum days.
