The CDC States:
Disinfectants must remain on a surface for the full contact time specified on the label to achieve the intended antimicrobial effect.
If a surface dries before the required contact time, the disinfectant may not achieve proper microbial kill.
Shortened exposure times may result in incomplete disinfection and survival of microorganisms.
If the surface dries before the required contact time, additional disinfectant should be applied to maintain wetness.
The EPA States:
EPA-registered disinfectants must be used according to label directions, including specified contact times.
Different disinfectants have different required contact times depending on formulation and target organisms.
The FDA States:
All disinfectants must be used exactly as directed, including application method and duration of exposure.
Upon reviewing the NIPCS Tip of the week, you will:
1. Understand the importance of not diluting disinfectant solution
2. Know what role EPA plays in our use of disinfectants
3. Understand key considerations when dealing with bloodborne pathogens
