IHS Office of Clinical and Preventive Services (OCPS)
Eye Care Data Mart
Home
Mission

The mission of the IHS is "to raise the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the highest level". The Eye Care data mart assists the agency meet this important mission by tracking and reporting many important services to safeguard the vision of our American Indian and Alaska Native patients. The data will be used by Eye Care staff to track eye care related services, assist with program management activities and justify additional resources to allow the agency to continue providing these important services to our native population.

Project Scope

The Office of Clinical and Preventive Services (OCPS) Eye Care (EC) “version 1” data mart supports agency-wide reporting of Eye Care related encounters documented in local Resource Patient Management System (RPMS) clinical systems and exported to the IHS’ National Data Warehouse (NDW) project. The EC data mart contains summary data for a number of eye care related visits and services provided by select eye care providers and clinical settings. The data mart provides national level Eye Care staff the ability to access aggregated data by national, area, service unit or facility level information on a number of eye care related issues.

The majority of the summary data reported by the EC data mart is from RPMS locations. However, it should be noted these data are not limited to RPMS sites only. Any tribal program, including non-RPMS sites can participate in the EC data mart by mapping to the current HL7 standards required for receipt, processing and storing of data by the NDW project.

Project Description

The Eye Care data mart makes full use of data mapped and exported to the IHS’ National Data Warehouse project. For this "version 1" application, nine (9) major eye care categories have been defined. These categories include:

  1. Total Eye Care related encounters
  2. Cataracts
  3. Macular Degeneration
  4. Blindness
  5. Refractive encounters
  6. Glaucoma
  7. Diabetic Retinopathy
  8. Amblyopic
  9. Eye Glasses Dispensing

Any of these categories can further be tracked by three (3) specific eye care related disciplines and eye care clinical setting.  Providers and clinical settings include:

Providers:

  • Optometrist
  • Contract Optometrist
  • Ophthalmologist

Clinical Settings:

  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Ophthalmology
  • Optometry
  • Retinopathy

The application can also filter reports by report type, location, provider, clinical setting and time period.  The user can select what type of output they prefer such as pie chart, bar chart or line graph.

The system also contains a robust security system that allows Eye Care Administrators to grant application access based upon their level of responsibility and specific location.
