Subject: Message from the Director: Area Director Update

I am writing today to update you that I have appointed Beverly Miller, M.H.A., M.B.A., as the Acting Area Director of the California Area Indian Health Service effective August 18, 2014.  Ms. Miller, a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, has been serving the California Area for over 20 years.

Ms. Miller began her career with the Indian Health Service in 1993 with the California Area Office as a financial management officer.  She has served in various senior management positions in the IHS California Area including as the Associate Director of Office Management and Services, the Area Executive Officer, and more recently as the Deputy Area Director.

As the Acting Area Director, she will manage a unique health care program provided entirely through contracts as allowed by the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, Public Law 93-638, where Tribes establish and maintain responsibility for the development and operation of their health facilities, programs, and services.  The California Area serves 103 tribal communities through 26 rural health care operating units, seven urban health programs, and 14 alcohol treatment programs.

Ms. Miller holds a Master of Health Administration from the University of Southern California and a Master of Business Administration degree from Golden Gate University, and is a Certified Public Accountant.

I am grateful to Ms. Miller for agreeing to serve as the Acting Area Director for the California Area IHS.

Yvette Roubideaux, M.D., M.P.H.
