Summary:

Food insecurity, or limited or uncertain access to adequate food for an active, healthy life, is an important contributor to health across the lifespan. Even after adjusting for socioeconomic status, food insecure adults are more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes and, once they have diabetes, to have more difficulty with self-management of diabetes and other co-morbidities. This training will address implications of food insecurity for diabetes prevention and management, including strategies for supporting food insecure patients in the clinical setting through screening and referral to community resources. The session invites health team members to think of ways to be more responsive to the needs of food insecure patients and take steps to improve services.
The recording of the live webinar on 3/27/19 will be available on the Division of Diabetes web site for three years. The live and recorded sessions of our trainings are all available at the following https://www.ihs.gov/diabetes/training/cmece-online-edu/diabetes-online-cme-ce-education/

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Explain key differences between hunger and food insecurity and why these differences are important for clinicians.
2. Describe three mechanisms by which food insecurity increases risk of diet – sensitive chronic disease, and how these mechanisms are relevant for diabetes care.
3.Identify one change you can make in your clinical or public health practice to assess or treat food insecurity.
