Summary:

This training will provide dentists, dental hygienists, and dental health aide therapists with the knowledge and tools to conduct oral health survey on 13-15 year-olds. This training is required of all examiners, whether or not they completed the training in 2013 for this age group.

Starting in 2010, the Indian Health Service began annual oral health surveillance that have helped highlight disparities in dental disease among the AI/AN population and have helped show improvement in certain age groups [1-5 and 6-9 year-olds]. Many participating IHS, tribal, and urban clinics have used these reports and their local data to better prioritize care in their clinics or apply for additional funding from internal and external sources. Our next survey project will begin on July 25th and last until February 29, 2020 and will focus on 13-15 year-old AI/AN children. Unlike the 2013 survey of this age group, this year’s surveys will be entirely clinic-based as we know how hard it is to get into the schools.

We will have our first survey training on Wednesday, July 24th from 1:00 – 2:00 Eastern Time and hope that you can join us. We are still developing the sampling scheme and hope to be able to have a list of randomly selected clinics within the next week, but any clinics that want to volunteer to participate can also join this webinar. The advantage of volunteering to participate is that your clinic will have local data that can help highlight disparities or improvements compared to your IHS Area and the national data….information you can use to allocate resources or apply for funding. Every survey examiner must either complete the live or recorded webinar training, even if they have completed this training in the past [it is only one hour].

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this live webinar, participants will be able to:
1.   Describe the methodology for this year’s surveillance program;
2.   List who major contacts are with the surveillance program;
3.   Apply key concepts in conducting surveys on 13-15 year-old youth.
