Summary:

This one hour presentation, directly provided to new dentists [new to IHS or tribal dental programs] by Area Dental Officers or Dental Support Centers, gives an overview of the mission, structure, and personnel systems of the Indian Health Service. It also provides new dentists a list of available resources including the CDE program, specialty consultants, information on Enduring Challenges, levels of care, Federal Tort Claims, and much more information that will help the new dentist quickly adjust to life in the IHS. Dentists completing the orientation will be given a course number and completion code by the presenting dental leader.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Recite the mission of the Indian Health Service;
2. Describe the processes of the Federal Tort Claims Act;
3. List and describe levels of care in the IHS system;
4. Define early childhood caries;
5. Implement at least five best practices from this presentation in daily clinical practice.

Prerequisites:

Participants must be new [<5 years of experience in an IHS, tribal, or urban dental program] dentist, and this presentation must be provided in person to the new dentist by an Area Dental Officer, IHS Headquarters Division of Oral Health Staff, or by a Dental Support Center.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
