DHPS Funding FY 2015
In 1976, Congress enacted the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA) PL 94-437 that began the authorization of the Indian Health Service (IHS) Indian Health Professions (IHP) to manage the Scholarship Program, Loan Repayment Program (LRP) and recruitment and retention activities for IHS.
The Division of Health Professions Support (DHPS) manages eight programs or activities. The total budget for DHPS in FY 2015 was more than $53.7 million. Congress provided the IHP with line item funding of approximately $48.3 million for all scholarship (Sections 103, 104 and 105), loan repayment (Section 108) and grants activities (Sections 112, 114 and 217). An additional $5.4 million is provided from IHS Hospital & Health Clinics (H&C) funding health professions recruitment and retention activities. A total of $2,633,546 in recruitment and retention, USUHS Student and Resident and Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP) funding was distributed as Tribal shares.
