IHS Strategic Plan 2018-2022

IHS is seeking comments on the following question and initial framework:

Do the IHS Mission, Vision, Goals and Objectives reflect the direction and priorities you feel the IHS should pursue over the next 5 years?

  • Mission - To raise the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the highest level.

    Vision - A health system that promotes Tribal ownership and pride.

    Goal 1: To ensure that comprehensive, culturally acceptable personal and public health services are available and accessible to American Indian and Alaska Native people.

    Objectives:

    1. Recruit, develop, and retain a dedicated, competent, caring workforce.
    2. Build, strengthen, and sustain collaborative relationships.
    3. Increase access to quality health care services.

    Goal 2: To promote excellence and quality through innovation of the Indian health system into an optimally performing organization.

    Objectives:

    1. Create quality improvement capability at all levels of the organization.
    2. Provide care to better meet the health care needs of Indian communities.

    Goal 3: Strengthen IHS program management and operations

    Objectives:

    1. Improve communication within the organization, with Tribes and other stakeholders, and with the general public.
    2. Secure and effectively manage assets and resources.
    3. Modernize information technology and information systems to support data driven decision.

  • Tribes

    IHS issued a Dear Tribal Leader letter with ways to submit in-person and written comments.

    Urban Programs

    IHS issued an Urban Indian Organization Leader letter with ways to submit in-person and written comments.

    IHS Staff

    IHS staff are requested to submit feedback using a specified template available on the IHS intranet at: home.ihs.gov. Please note the address is for internal agency content and unavailable for non-IHS users.

  • A timeline of IHS Strategic Plan activities is listed below. Please note the proposed dates and activities are subject to change.

    2017

    • September 15: IHS issues letters to initiate Tribal Consultation and Urban Confer on the IHS Strategic Plan for 2018-2022.
    • September 22: IHS issues letters to Tribal leaders and Urban Indian Organization leaders on ways to provide in-person and written comments.
    • September – October: 30-day comment period on draft IHS Strategic Plan goals and objectives framework at listening sessions, webinars and in-person meetings.
    • October 31: Deadline to submit comments for workgroup consideration
    • November 14: Workgroup Meeting #1
    • November 28: IHS issues letters to Tribal leaders [PDF - 94 KB] and Urban Indian Organization leaders [PDF - 94 KB] to share progress to date on the IHS draft Strategic Plan 2018-2022.
    • November 29: Workgroup Meeting #2
    • December 13: Workgroup Meeting #3
    • December 29: IHS issues letters to Tribal leaders and Urban Indian Organization leaders
      to provide an update on the progress of workgroup activities and updated timeline of the IHS Strategic Plan 2018-2022.

    2018

    • January 10: Workgroup Meeting #4
    • January 14: Workgroup Meeting #5
    • February 1: Workgroup Meeting #6
    • March: 30-day public comment period on the draft Strategic Plan. During the comment period, the IHS will hold a National All Tribal and Urban Leader Call to share updates and provide a forum for comment on the draft Strategic Plan.
    • April: Final IHS Strategic Plan to be completed and published for use.
