EXEMPT: Yes JOB CODE: N/A TARGET SALARY: $50.00/DOQ SHIFT: 8:30 – 5:30 flex PROGRAM: Clinic LOCATION: Clinic REPORTS TO: Chief Pharmacist SUMMARY: Provides pharmacy services at the Sophie Trettevick Indian Health Center (STIHC) in accordance with applicable federal, state and tribal laws and ethical standards of practice. Dispense drugs prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and provide information to patients about medications and their use. May advise physicians and other health practitioners on the selection, dosage, interactions, and side effects of medications. Duties: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Due to the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities. Independently carries out all clinical pharmacy functions. This includes drug selection, compounding, and dispensing, and requires accuracy with both dosage and directions for use as well as identification of therapeutic incompatibilities to avoid harm. Reviewing a patient's complete medical record with the goal of optimizing drug therapy is incorporated into the process of processing both new prescriptions and refills. Maintains current knowledge of new and changing drug therapies and evidence based guidelines. Review prescriptions to assure accuracy, to ascertain the needed ingredients, and to evaluate their suitability. Provide information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, proper medication storage, duration of therapy, suggestions for self-monitoring of therapy, and information on disposal of unused drugs. Maintain records, such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, charge system files, inventories, control records for radioactive nuclei, or registries of poisons, narcotics, or controlled drugs. Plan, implement, or maintain procedures for mixing, packaging, or labeling pharmaceuticals, according to policy and legal requirements, to ensure quality, security, and proper disposal. Assess the identity, strength, or purity of medications. Communicate to patients the medication and dosages prescribed and answer patient questions. Provide information and consultation to medical providers on contraindications, managing side effects, and options for alternative medication to avoid incompatibilities and prevent adverse reactions. Consult with staff on recommendations for optimizing pharmacy services and accommodating special requests whenever feasible. Provides exceptional customer service to patients without compromising policies/procedures and regulatory/legal requirements. Actively seeks to understand and respond to each patient's individual needs. Provide in-service training to clinical staff covering pharmacotherapy related topics. Participate in teaching programs for residents and interns. Maintain a complete and high-quality library of medical and pharmaceutical references and books, journals, and database subscriptions for researching drug information and completing continuing education. Contribute to the fiscal management of pharmacy operations to minimize unnecessary expense or loss of revenue. Ensure compliance with formulary and policy guidelines with the goal of returning pharmacy revenue into more services for patients. Provide leadership in the Pharmacy & Therapeutics committee and participates on other committees when requested.
Qualifications: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. OTHER SKILLS Ability to work in a team setting using excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills. Ability to comply with HIPAA regulations which mandates complete confidentiality with all administrative, medical and all other pertinent information that comes to their attention or knowledge. Knowledge of current dispensing and drug compounding practices, labeling requirements, and all relevant drug regulations and rules governing pharmacy practice. Knowledge of basic pharmacy management functions. Ability to deal with persons of diverse backgrounds tactfully. Must be able to handle difficult patients. Ability to ensure good public relations by maintaining a cooperative and considerate attitude toward others. Must have the ability to work with Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets, and electronic health records. Additional software program experience is preferred. Ability to work in a team setting with excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills. Ability to effectively communicate to patients the medication and dosages prescribed and answer patient questions. Must have knowledge of current dispensing practices and drug compounding, correct labeling, drug regulations, and therapeutic incompatibilities. Must have knowledge of basic pharmacy management functions. Must have knowledge of Pharmacology, pathphysiology, pharmacokinetics, disease states, and treatments. Ability to deal with persons with diverse backgrounds tactfully and effectively. Experience with third part billing and prior authorization procedures is preferred. Ability to ensure good public relations by maintaining a cooperative and considerate attitude toward others, must be able to handle difficult patients. Computer experience is required. Must be able to work with programs such as; word, excel, electronic health records and additional software program experience is preferred. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree from a four-year college in pharmacy recognized by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS May be required to drive a Tribal GSA vehicle to perform job duties. If so, must have a valid Washington State Driver's license and be insurable. A driving history/background check will be conducted on the applicant. This position is classified as a sensitive Tribal position. Therefore, applicant must submit to and clear a pre-employment criminal background check. Must have a current unrestricted licensed to practice pharmacy in Washington State (provide a photocopy of license) or be licensed out of State and be willing and able to obtain a WA State Pharmacist license within 90 days of hire . PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee must regularly lift and/or move more than 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employees is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with your body, arms, and/or legs. Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle and be insurable under the tribe's insurance. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Majority of work is limited to sedentary bench type assignments indoors in an environmentally controlled setting. Work requires constant contact with others in face-to-face discussions, or by telephone. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Immunization Requirements: Must be immunized against measles and rubella, or provide documentation/proof of immunity prior to employment. Employees are required to provide proof of other immunizations as recommended for healthcare workers by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or of immunity to these diseases. All employees shall have tuberculin (TB) test upon employment and annually thereafter, or have a follow-up plan approved by employee health if there is a positive test. If employee is known to have a positive TB test prior to entrance on duty, no TB testing will be carried out; instead the employee shall see a physician to establish an individualized program to assure the absence of active TB in the employee, shall complete and annually system questionnaire, and must report any relevant symptoms promptly. Exception: Measles and rubella - If you were born before 1957 you are not required to have the measles and rubella immunization nor do you need to provide documentation. Special Consideration: if you are allergic to any component of the vaccine or have documented history of severe reaction to vaccine or are currently pregnant you may not have to be immunized, however, you are required to provide documentation/proof, in order to be considered for employment.
