Summary: The incumbent provides, directs, and evaluates the lactation needs and care of patients, including developing, implementing, and modifying (if necessary) a plan and/or a provision of care. The incumbent educates staff `who care for mothers and newborns regarding how to support breastfeeding mothers and babies. The incumbent organizes breastfeeding promotion and support activities and projects.
Duties: Provide comprehensive instruction to prenatal, antepartum and postpartum patients using holistic considerations. Use educational strategies for individual, family or group guidance to encourage the breastfeeding option. Highly specialized skills and abilities based on patient specific assessments and interventions. Ability to use telephone and face-to-face assessments to provide education and coaching towards breastfeeding goals. Implements standards of care guidelines for assisting breastfeeding mothers in all areas of the organization (ED, WHS, OBU, MSU, ICU, PCC, Pediatrics, etc.) Maintains a working knowledge of Baby Friendly designation requirements and initiatives. Provides supplemental information (Pamphlets, Posters, etc.) in accordance with latest evidence-based practice. Consults with attending physicians, midwives, nurses and other staff members to support the patient's health. Observes and assesses the patient's clinical condition. Collects and interprets data and takes appropriate action to support breastfeeding and the health of the newborn. Provides routine training to maintain staff proficiency for those caring for breastfeeding mothers and babies. Accurately and efficiently maintains health records within the electronic health record (EHR). Participates in the development, update, and evaluation of standards of care (QAPI). Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency in lactation knowledge and practice through continuing education. Attends staff meetings and outside workshops. Participates in the staff orientation and preceptorship program in collaboration with Nursing Education Department. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse with breastfeeding mothers and babies. Education: Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). Lactation Counselor Certification. Valid and unrestricted license in any US state or territory.
