Fort Defiance Indian Hospital Board is one of the oldest and most respected Indian Health Services' affiliated hospitals. FDIHB is an integrated healthcare system committed to providing healthcare to 16 surrounding communities, structured around 3 entities Tséhootsooí Medical Center (TMC), Nihi Dine'é Bá Wellness Center and Nahat'a Dziil Health Center (NDHC), located in Sanders, AZ. FDIHB health system provides inpatient and outpatient services and is affiliated with University of California San Francisco's Heal Fellows Initiative, transforming the healthcare needs of the Navajo Nation. This position provides direct and comprehensive primary, preventive and therapeutic optometric eye care to individuals across the spectrum of age and development within a high-risk population. | Duties: | Independently provides direct comprehensive clinical optometric care in an outpatient and inpatient hospital setting. Delivers high quality primary eye and vision care services. Examines for and prescribes corrective lenses. Provides total patient care including prevention, health maintenance, early diagnosis, treatment and follow-up services. Orders diagnostic imaging and laboratory studies. Utilizes advanced optometric procedures and instrumentation to diagnose, treat and manage ocular disorders and diseases. Determines proper remedial alternative and discusses and interprets findings with patients. Suggest appropriate treatment methods including coordination of medical eye care services with other physicians or specialists within and outside of FDIHB. Provides patient and family education regarding ocular health issues. Evaluates, manages and triages emergent non-surgical eye conditions. Collaborates with other optometrists, ophthalmologist, physicians, nursing staff, technicians and administrators to facilitate care to meet common goals. Performs minor surgical procedures (suture removal, corneal foreign body removal) consistent with hospital clinical privileges. Ensures preparation and completion of comprehensive medical records in a timely appropriate manner in compliance with applicable guidelines. Participates in mandatory departmental and hospital staff meetings. Participates in any departmental quality assurance and performance improvement (QA/PI) projects and academic programs. Supervises optometric residents and students when applicable. Maintains clinical competence through continuing medical education, self-study, review of professional journals and proficiency training. Provides professional and technical in-services to department personnel. Provides emergency on-call consultation and care as directed. Performs other duties as assigned. |
| Qualifications: | EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of direct work experience or the completion of an optometry residency accredited by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO). EDUCATION: Doctoral of Optometry Degree from a school accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE). Active unrestricted Optometrist License in an U.S. State or Territory. Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents (TPA) and Diagnostic Pharmaceutical Agents (DPA) certified. MANDATORY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Excellent customer service skills. Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities pertaining to optics, eyes, and vision. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventative healthcare measures. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of various educational, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Knowledge of hospital-wide policy and procedures, and medical functions to coordinate and participate in departmental activities. Skill in tactful communication, judgment and persuasiveness. Skill in the use of all forms of topical ophthalmic diagnostic and therapeutic pharmacological agents to evaluate, diagnose and manage disorders of the visual and ocular system. Ability to use oral therapeutic medicines as indicated to treat/manage ocular pathology. Ability to competently diagnose and manage a caseload where 60-70% is comprised of ocular pathology. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels, as well as with other agencies and the public. Ability to be educated in the proficient use of numerous technical medical and ophthalmological devices. Ability to meet the criteria for Credentialing & Privileging of FDIHB Medical Staff Membership of the FDIHB Medical Staff Bylaws. A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. |
