Indian Health Service The Federal Health Program for American Indians and Alaska Natives
The scholarship application cycle is now closed. All application materials were required to have been sent to the IHS Scholarship Program postmarked no later than March 28, 2017. Scholarship Program staff are currently processing and reviewing new applications and will distribute all 2017 – 18 scholarship award letters during the first week of July. We recommend that you read our eNewsletter for information about other scholarship, grant and loan programs in advance of notification from the Scholarship office. This way, you can investigate other financial assistance options available to you. Please contact the program office if you have any questions regarding the application review process.
How Scholarships are Awarded
The IHS Scholarship Program awards scholarships based on the following policies:
- All eligible scholarship recipients applying for an extension of their existing scholarship are awarded first.
- New applicants scoring 70 points or higher, as determined by the Application Review Committee, are sorted by discipline (for example, physician, pharmacist, pre-dental, pre-nursing).
- Those applicants are then ranked by graduation date (those closest to graduation against those furthest from graduation).
- The application score then determines the final ranking order between applicants who are scheduled to graduate during the same academic period (spring, summer or fall).
The number of new scholarship awards depends on available funding after awarding scholarship extension applications. Should a significant number of scholarship applicants decline an offered scholarship (usually due to receiving other financial assistance or not getting accepted into a health professions program), additional awards may be offered late in the summer.
