Alternative Paths to an Indian Health Career

Thank you for your application to the Indian Health Service (IHS) Scholarship Program! Although you didn’t receive an IHS scholarship this year, we encourage you to seek out other financial aid opportunities to support your pursuit of a health profession degree and experience a rewarding Indian health career.

IHS continues to seek dedicated, caring and highly qualified health professionals. If you still envision a career focused on patient-centered care that also provides the balance of family and community with professional and personal fulfillment, then an Indian health career is certainly a path you should continue to follow.

Take Advantage of Student Aid Resources

We understand that education expenses can add up, so we’ve compiled a number of online resources that provide free information about student scholarships.

Financial Aid Options for American Indian and Alaska Native Students

There are a number of grant and scholarship opportunities available that support American Indian and Alaska Native students. Here’s a list to get you started:

IHS does not endorse any of the scholarships, grants or loan programs listed or their associated websites.

Government Programs

The federal government provides a number of tools, grants and loan options to assist students with the cost of a college education. These include:

  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) — A tool to apply for federal student financial aid such as the Pell Grant, student loans and college work-study assistance.
  • Pell Grants — Federal financial support for undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor’s or professional degree.

Student loans are another option to cover your education expenses. The IHS Loan Repayment Program (LRP) and the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program offer health professionals an opportunity to reduce qualified education loan debt in exchange for an initial two-year commitment serving American Indian and Alaska Native patient populations.

Note: In the event that you qualify for multiple awards, federal policy allows the receipt of only one form of federally funded loan repayment at a time.
