Activity: Architectural

Keyword: Interstitial Space

Background:
Flexibility of services is needed for modern hospitals along with the requirement to install and service newer and more complex equipment.

Lessons Learned:
New programs need space and additional heating and cooling loads require additional equipment and ductwork. Duct shafts and equipment space is at a premium and interstitial space would be an ideal solution to the ever changing requirements in the health care industry.

Recommended Action:
Require that interstitial space be studied for inclusion in all new IHS Hospitals. Evaluation should rely heavily on life cycle costing of this space.
