Activity: O & M

Keyword: Security Access

CSO No.:N/A

Background:
In any large facility with numerous staff, patients and visitors there are many security and access problems. Master key systems are expensive to purchase and maintain and keys can be misused and copied. A lost master key at the hospital required all locks and keys to be changed at great expense and the system is still complex to manage and maintain.

Lessons Learned:
A card access system with flexibility to admit staff to secure areas and to keep records of access times is well suited for a large health care facility. Lost or stolen cards can be cancelled and reissued at nominal expense and effort.

Recommended Action:
Consider card access and security systems for all new IHS health care facilities.
