DE0035: Expanding Oral Health Knowledge for the Dental Team
This course is not subject to the lottery. It is available to staff in the Phoenix and Tucson Areas for IHS, Tribal and Urban Indian Dental Programs.
The first session provides insight on managing the behavior of pediatric patients. Using stories of personal experiences [some of them humorous], practical advice and AAPD guidelines, Dr. Kerr attempts to teach non-pediatric dentists how to manage behavior in order to facilitate providing treatment safely and speedily. The second session will discuss the role of the Mid-level dental provider to address oral health disparities in Indian Country. The third session will cover how oral health professionals and public health dental practitioners must make fact-based, data driven and scientifically reasoned choices. Participants will be provided with an overview of epidemiology. Recommendations for finding reliable and valid data relevant to oral health will be covered and examples of epidemiological applications in oral health and public health dentistry will be discussed.
Upon completion of this meeting, the participant will be able to:
1. Apply learned techniques to the management of pediatric patients in clinical settings.
2. Reduce anxiety and stress on all dental personnel.
3. Identify the signs of alcoholism and tobacco abuse.
4. Explain the science of epidemiology.
5. List the differences between incidence and prevalence.
