Summary:

The Nashville Area Office of Public Health sponsors the fifth annual meeting. This three day meeting will provide area health teams with knowledge and skills in improving the quality of health care provided.

Learning Objectives:

On Wednesday, April 7, the Oral Health Breakouts will consist of the following sessions:

Session 1
Summary: Meet the Singer Family and provide dental services in your walk-in clinic.
Learning Objectives:
1. Develop a problem list for a patient that includes not only dental problems but also overall health problems.
2. Describe how dental can integrate with the health care team with respect to systemic conditions found in patients.
3. Describe warning signs in a patient’s medical and social history that may impact the success of oral health care.

Session 2
Summary: Develop a comprehensive dental treatment plan for Janet Singer, taking into consideration relevant medical issues, caries risk classification, and standards of care within the dental profession.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the relevancy and impact on dental programs of the process of selective targeting of high-risk groups.
2. Describe the treatment sequence in a standard dental treatment plan.
3. Practice developing a dental treatment plan on an adult with complicating medical and social factors.
Session 3
Summary: Develop a comprehensive dental treatment plan for Tyler Singer, taking into consideration relevant medical and social issues, caries risk classification, and standards of care within the dental profession.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the importance of early access to care for pediatric patients.
2. Describe the key components of the new IHS Early Childhood Caries Initiative.
3. Practice developing a dental treatment plan on a pediatric patient.
Session 4
Summary: Treat Janet Singer. Complete periodontal care, restorative treatment, and oral surgery.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the treatment algorithm for patients with moderate periodontal disease.
2. Compare and contrast four types of restorative materials: amalgam, posterior composite, glass ionomer, and resin ionomers.
3. Discuss the medical considerations, including parameters for providing treatment, for oral and maxillofacial surgery.
4. Describe the fundamentals of exodontia.

Session 5
Summary: This session is a summary of all of the recommended quality improvement indicators developed by the Indian Health Service Division of Oral Health in November 2009.
Learning Objectives:
1. List the four quality improvement indicators for the prevention of oral disease, describing the appropriate age group as necessary.
2. Describe at least four quality improvement indicators pertaining to clinical efficiency, including how to measure these indicators.
3. List at least one additional quality improvement administrative indicator.
Session 6
Summary: This session is where participants have the chance to develop their own change ideas. Participants will work together in small groups to develop PDSAs that test specific change ideas, PDSAs that they can immediately implement upon their return to their home facility.
Learning Objectives:
1. Devise a short list of quality of care problems in your dental program.
2. Prioritize the problem list and develop a list of change ideas that can be tested to improve the quality indicator.
3. Complete the “Plan” [P] portion of a PDSA cycle and be prepared to discuss that plan with your peers and with your entire healthcare team. Share your PDSA among your peers.
Session 7
Summary: Participants will share PDSAs that test specific change ideas, PDSAs that they can immediately implement upon their return to their home facility.
Learning Objectives:
1. Devise a short list of quality of care problems in your dental program.
2. Prioritize the problem list and develop a list of change ideas that can be tested to improve the quality indicator.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
