Summary:

The goal of Challenges is to share experiences and ideas among dentists new to the Indian Health Service. We plan to help strengthen your skills and clinical confidence particularly in the specialty areas of pediatric dentistry, and oral surgery, so that you can address the unique treatment needs of a diverse patient population. The course will include clinical data analysis, personnel training, and problem solving.

Learning Objectives:

Pediatric Dental Learning Objectives

Didactic Session:
1. Report of referral process for pediatric dental patients to ANMC, Anchorage
2. Identify and discuss appropriate behavior guidance techniques
3. Outline tools of comprehensive pediatric dental treatment planning
4. List preventative practices and tips for pediatric patient oral health
5. Examine pulpal therapy: indications and treatment
6. Discuss indications and contraindications for anterior and posterior composite restorations and stainless steel crowns

Clinical Sessions:
1. Prepare and place anterior for strip crowns
2. Prepare and place stainless steel crowns

Oral Surgery Learning Objectives
Didactic Session:
1. Outline signs and symptoms of maxillary and mandibular jaw fractures
2. List emergent mandible fracture stabilization techniques
3. Discuss signs and symptoms of oral facial infections
4. Examine treatment options for oral facial infections
5. Describe surgical extraction principles and suturing techniques
6. Report on referral process for patients requiring oral surgery services
7. Discuss arrangements for patient and escort travel and lodging

Clinical Sessions:
1. Demonstrate stabilization techniques for jaw fractures including: bridle wires and arch bar placement
2. Design full thickness mucoperiosteal flaps
3. Demonstrate suturing techniques

Dentists practicing in Alaska for less than one year.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
