Summary:

This course is offered for dental assistants at Cass Lake clinic only.
This is a course designed for dental assistants to have the opportunity to expand/learn the skills of ultrasonic scaling to remove visible calculus. The course begins with a full day of required lecture material, and then students work on dentiforms and on other course participants. During the remainder of the course, students will work on scheduled patients. They will be using state-of-the art Piezoelectric scalers or Cavitron ultrasonic scalers. The use of antimicrobials including sulcular irrigation, and new oral hygiene adjuncts will also be covered. The course will have a strong clinical emphasis. In addition, the Indian Health Service [IHS] and American Dental Association [ADA] periodontal procedure codes will be reviewed.

Students must complete 20 patient cleanings and be checked and scored by their hygienist/dentist at their home dental clinic, documented on the Follow-Up Training Progress Record, before the Course Completion Certificate is provided by the DOH.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Relate Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs [CPITN] scores to a need for potential periodontal treatment.
2. Detect disease, supra and subgingival calculus.
3. Provide thorough ultrasonic scaling of teeth.
4. Use scalers and curettes efficiently and atraumatically.
5. Accurately code for periodontal and hygiene procedures with IHS/ADA coding.
6. Sharpen curets and scalers correctly and efficiently.
7. Recommend effective toothpastes, mouthrinses and oral hygiene aids to patients.
8. Motivate patients to improve plaque removal and periodontal health.
9. Identify who is at risk for periodontal breakdown.

Prerequisites:

This didactic and clinical course is for GS-4 and above or equivalent dental assistants who have completed the basic clinical periodontics course in the past 5 years or who are currently using ultrasonic scalers on a regular basis. A signed letter stating this information is required from the dental assistants' Dental Chief or Dental Hygienist.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
