Summary:

The purpose of Challenges is to provide new dentists practicing in the Alaska Indian Health Services didactic and hands on training in pediatric dentistry and oral surgery specialties and public health and advanced general dental topics. Participants will receive an overview of Alaska's Dental Health Aide Therapist program

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Didactic Session:

Pediatric Dental Learning Objectives

•   Report of referral process for pediatric dental patients to ANMC, Anchorage
•   Identify and discuss appropriate behavior guidance techniques
•   Outline tools of comprehensive pediatric dental treatment planning
•   List preventative practices and tips for pediatric patient oral health
•   Examine pulpal therapy: indications and treatment
•   Discuss indications and contraindications for anterior and posterior composite restorations and stainless steel crowns

Clinical Sessions:
•   Prepare and place anterior for strip crowns
•   Prepare and place stainless steel crowns

Didactic Session:

Oral Surgery Learning Objectives

•   Outline signs and symptoms of maxillary and mandibular jaw fractures
•   List emergent mandible fracture stabilization techniques
•   Discuss signs and symptoms of oral facial infections
•   Examine treatment options for oral facial infections
•   Describe surgical extraction principles and suturing techniques
•   Report on referral process for patients requiring oral surgery services
•   Discuss arrangements for patient and escort travel and lodging


Clinical Sessions:
•   Demonstrate stabilization techniques for jaw fractures including: bridle wires and arch bar placement
•   Design full thickness mucoperiosteal flaps
•   Demonstrate suturing techniques

DHAT/Public Health Learning Objectives
•   Discuss the role of dental health aid therapists in Alaska
•   Examine the fundamentals of Public Health Dentistry
•   Review onsite DHAT training facility

Advanced General Practice Objectives
•   Discuss human papilloma virus and relationship to oral cancer.
•   Review oral cancer screening common and less common signs and symptoms.
•   Present current research for silver diamine fluoride [SDF].
•   Identify clinical indications for use, consent, contraindications, and procedure for use ofSDF.

Please Make Checks Payable to: Indian Health Service.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
