Coding Training

The HIM Program, in partnership with the Office of Resource and Access Program (ORAP) supports the need to provide training for certifying new coders, as well as continuing education for certified coders. When funding is available national coding training is announced through the Area HIM consultants. Also, there are options available for staff to gain this needed training through professional coding organizations such as the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) , the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) , and Procedural Coders Institute . Trailblazer also provides training for IHS and makes available coding training on their website.

Area HIM Consultants Meetings

The Area HIM Consultants meet bi-annually to discuss HIM national issues, program initiatives, develop policy, and to provide guidance to I/T/U health information professionals in the field. The last meeting was held December 1-3, 2009 in Window Rock, Arizona.

Area HIM Conferences

Some Areas provide an HIM Conference that provides guidance on HIM practices. This is usually attended by local HIM SU staff. Contact the appropriate Area HIM Consultant for further information.

HIM/BO Partnership Conference

The IHS Health Information Management/Business Office (HIM/BO) Partnership Conference is typically held in April of each year. The conference provides operational training for I/T/U HIM/BO staff. HIM training offered at this annual conference typically include the following topics: Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA), Privacy Act, Freedom of Information Act, ICD-9/CPT & ICD-10 coding, Electronic Health Record for HIM, the Legal Health Record, Data Quality, Monitoring and Auditing, and training on various RPMS software applications.

Resource and Patient Management System (RPMS) Training

Listed on the Resource and Patient Management System (RPMS) Training page are the current trainings offered for all IHS Areas.

NOTE: RPMS training events are open only to individuals affiliated with Indian Health Service, Tribal, or Urban Indian health program facilities in the United States.
