BACKGROUND:

This transmittal forwards an updated revision of Chapter 13, Part 3, Maternal and Child Health, of the Indian Health Manual. This revision updates the 1961 version of the chapter according to the recommendations of the IHS Maternal and Child Health Consultants and it follows the latest recommendations on maternal and child health care as they appear on the corresponding standards and recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatricians. It also includes the recommendations of the IHS Maternal and Child Health Consultants. Included in the text of the Chapter is a new section, 3-13-13, on Maternal and Infant Mortality Review Committees. The IHS memorandum of March 7, 1966 on Battered Children has been incorporated as an addendum to the chapter.
