Specialty - Periodontics
Dr. Todd Smith is the Indian Health Service National Clinical Consultant of Periodontics, which involves treatment of the gums and bone surrounding the teeth. He is particularly interested in sharing information with medical providers on the relationship between poor oral health and systemic illnesses such as cardiovascualr disease, diabetes mellitus, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Dr. Smith welcomes opportunities for discussion, and is willing to refer requests for information to the IHS National Consultants in oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, endodontics, and prosthodontics. Dr. Smith is a retired Captain in the USPHS who has been with the IHS since 1979. He became Board Certified in Periodontics in 1999. He has received the IHS National Award for Excellence in Clinical Dentistry and the Commendation and Outstanding Service Medals. Though he spends most of his time providing clinical care in periodontics, he also enjoys providing training in the field and teaching throughout the Phoenix Area and the IHS. He currently works full time as a civil service employee. Dr. Smith and his wife Lonni love the outdoors, music, fitness training, and their 2 grown kids.
