Many individuals choose to enter the Indian Health Service as a Commissioned Officer of the US Public Health Service (USPHS). Although it is one of the seven uniformed services of the United States Government, USPHS is not a military service. However, working for IHS in this capacity does require a minimum commitment to a minimum of two years. If you are a dentist who accepted the Accession Bonus (signing bonus), your commitment to the USPHS and IHS is for four years. In return, you will receive exceptional federal benefits.
