The IHS Loan Repayment Program - Your Career Advantage

Many Indian Health Service dentists and dental hygienists take advantage of the IHS Loan Repayment Program (LRP) to help them pay off their educational loans. Commissioned Corps, Civil Service and Tribal employees are all eligible to apply for an IHS LRP award. As a new hire, you must agree to work for two years in full-time clinical practice at an IHS facility or in an approved Indian health program.

If you complete the application process successfully and receive an LRP award, the IHS LRP will repay all or a portion of your eligible health professional education expenses up to $24,000 (including allocation for taxes) per year. After the initial two years, you may request an annual LRP contract extension for up to an additional $24,000 per year for each year you serve until your school loans are completely repaid.

Fiscal Facts

The first round of awards begins in January/February and continues in monthly cycles until all of the national funds are distributed. There will be sites willing to guarantee Loan Repayment even if the national program funds are completely distributed.  Sites guaranteeing LRP awards offer them through the Supplemental Loan Repayment Program (SLRP).  Sites offering SLRP are denoted with a green dollar sign in our IHS Dental Vacancies list.

You are encouraged to complete the LRP Application at the same time you apply for jobs.
