This position provides direct and comprehensive primary, preventive and therapeutic optometric care to individuals across the spectrum of age and development within a high-risk rural population. Duties: Individually provides direct comprehensive clinical optometric care in an outpatient setting. Delivers high quality primary eye and vision care services. Examines for and prescribes corrective lenses. Provides total patient care including prevention, health maintenance, early diagnosis, treatment and follow up services. Orders diagnostic imaging and laboratory studies. Utilizes advanced optometric procedures and instrumentation to diagnose, treat and manage ocular disorders and diseases. Determines proper remedial alternative and discusses and interprets findings with patients. Suggests appropriate treatment methods, including coordination of medical eye care services with other physicians or specialist within and outside of FDIHB. Provides patient and family education regarding ocular health issues. Evaluates, manages and triages emergent non-surgical eye conditions. Collaborates with other optometrists, ophthalmologists, physicians, nursing staff, technicians and administrators to facilitate care to meet common healthcare goals. Performs minor surgical procedures (suture removal, corneal foreign body removal) consistent with hospital clinical privileges. Ensures preparation and completion of comprehensive medical records in a timely appropriate manner in compliance with applicable guidelines. Participates in mandatory departmental and hospital staff meetings. Participates in any departmental Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QA/PI) and academic programs. Supervises optometric resident and students when applicable. Maintains clinical competence through continuing medical education, self-study, review of professional journals and proficiency training. Provides professional and technical in-services to department staff. Provides emergency on-call consultation and care as directed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: EXPERIENCE: Completion of one (1) year optometric residency or three (3) years if clinical experience in an ocular disease based practice. EDUCATION: Doctor of Optometry Degree (OD) from a school accredited by the Accreditation Council of Optometric Association (ACOE). Active unrestricted optometrist license in any U.S. State or Territory.
