Fort Defiance Indian Hospital is located on the Navajo Reservation in northern
Arizona, 15 minutes north of Window Rock, Arizona (the capitol of the Navajo
Nation). Fort Defiance Indian Hospital is licensed for 56 inpatient beds
including: an Intensive Care Unit, Medical-Surgical Unit, OB/GYN Ward and an
inpatient Adolescent Psychiatric Care Unit. The 65-exam room Ambulatory Care
Center and Dental Clinic accumulates over 235,000 Outpatient visits yearly. FDIH
has a 24/7 Level 2 Emergency Room. The hospital is a 245,000 square foot
facility which opened in 2002.
Purpose Statement:
Residents completing this program will have developed the necessary skills,
including leadership, problem-solving, clinical judgment and cultural sensitivity
to provide a high level of pharmaceutical care within the Indian Health Service. The
residents will be proficient at delivering accurate drug information to patients,
caregivers and other healthcare providers. Each resident will have a concrete
foundation in medical informatics as well as having acquired the skills to develop,
implement and evaluate pharmacy programs. The residents will be able to
employ self-evaluation techniques and identify areas for continuing education
to allow them to meet the needs of and provide future pharmaceutical care beyond
the completion of this residency.
Rotational Experience opportunities:
Clinical Pharmacy services including pharmacy-based anticoagulation clinic, dialysis
patient interdisciplinary team meetings, inpatient rotation with hospitalist
provider, inpatient pharmacy care, ambulatory care for adults and pediatrics,
and chart review and medication tray fill for a special education/long-term care
facility. Experience also includes drug utilization review, pharmacy informatics,
P&T committee involvement, policy writing, drug information and kinetics.
Special features:
Fort Defiance is located in northeastern Arizona in a high-desert climate. It
is ideal for many outdoor activities including hiking and biking. Many
ski areas are located within a day’s drive of Fort Defiance including areas
in New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. In addition, Fort Defiance is within
driving distance of the metropolitan areas of Phoenix, Flagstaff, and Albuquerque.
