Definitions of class types:

  • eLearning: Instructor-led demonstration via web and phone. This class type does not include hands-on instruction. Participants may join from their home site with phone and computer/internet access.
  • eLearning/Hands-on: Instructor-led demonstration and hands-on via web and phone. Some sessions provide access to an OIT training environment while others require access to a home training environment or test patient. Participants may join from their home site with phone and computer/internet access.
  • Classroom: In-person instructor-led lecture and hands-on in an OIT training environment. Participants must be in the classroom to participate.
  • Satellite Classroom: Area provided proctor supports an instructor teaching via web and phone. This class type includes hands-on in an OIT training environment. Participants must be in the classroom to participate.

Prerequisite: Ideally, participants who attend this course should have a basic understanding of the medical billing process.

Description: This is a two-day class that focuses on the RPMS Accounts Receivable software application. Training will include: the RPMS medical billing revenue cycle, creating and correcting collection batches, posting payments and adjustments manually, using the flat rate posting and ERA [electronic remittance advice] posting options, managing unallocated cash, generating reports, managing aged receivables, and basic UFMS file reconciliation.

Students will learn the skills to create and modify menus, add new and edit existing users, monitor and tune scheduled RPMS tasks, identify and resolve programming system errors, and manage RPMS devices.

     BCMA Configuration & Test

Prerequisite: This BCMA Training and Deployment Activity is strictly for [a] Eligible Hospital [EH] BCMA & eMAR Team Members that must report on the Meaningful Use Stage 2 eMAR Measure in 2014 and [b] Members of the VA-IHS BCMA Cross Functional Team [CFT]. The purpose of the VA-IHS BCMA CFT is to address the goals and objectives identified in the CFT Charter and establish an operational relationship. The CFT will assist and guide implementation and operational use of BCMA in IHS and Tribal Healthcare facilities.

     BCMA Drug File Optimization Six Week Series - eLearning/Hands-On

Prerequisite: Intended Audience: Inpatient Pharmacy Informaticists and BCMA Coordinators primarily for Browning and those needing a refresher. Requires advanced knowledge of the RPMS Inpatient Suite of Pharmacy Applications and Fileman. Each participant must have access to a computer with internet connection and a separate telephone line to dial into the web conferencing number. Participants must also have access to both their facility’s RPMS roll & scroll system and EHR GUI.

Description: The RPMS Behavioral Health System v4.0 provides a graphical user interface to the Behavioral Health System application. The focus of this training is on direct provider entry of clinical data and other functionality in BHS v4.0 GUI. Some of the functionality featured in this training includes electronic signature, enhanced intake functionality, simplified data entry, and modified reports. The Reports and Manager Utilities modules of BHS v4.0 are not in the GUI format and an introduction to these functions will be conducted in the RPMS traditional “roll and scroll” format.      EHR End-User & Go-Live [Site Specific]

Prerequisite: Participants must have access to a computer with internet connection and a telephone line to dial into the web conferencing number. Participants must also have access to both their facility’s RPMS roll & scroll system and EHR GUI. It is expected that each site's participants will function as an EHR Working Team and be located in one central location at their facility during this training and deployment activity. It is also recommneded that the health care facility reduce appointments and reassign workloads in order to allow time to adjust to work processs and provide minimum disruption of on-going operations.

Description: Indian Health, Tribal, and Urban [I/T/U] Healthcare Facilities often have limited technical knowledge and limited time for learning, planning, and shepherding an implementation process for Electronic Health Records.  Indian Healthcare I/T/U Facilities often need help implementing the RPMS Electronic Health Record [EHR] to align with their practice and enable them to qualify for Meaningful Use [MU] incentives. This is an intensive "Hands-On", "At-the-Elbow", site-specific EHR activity designed for "Super User" and "End User" health care professionals responsible for using the RPMS EHR to document a clinical patient encounter at their facility.      e-Prescribing 2.0 Drug File Optimization Five Week Series - eLearning

Prerequisite: Intended Audience: The audience for this course is pharmacy informaticists and other individuals involved in pharmacy drug file optimization/maintenance AND interested in the e-prescribing functionality. Before a site can deploy e-Prescribing the drug file optimization steps are REQUIRED and a complete copy of the drug file must be submitted to the e-Prescribing federal team for review. Pharmacy informaticists at sites already using e-Prescribing are invited to join as well.

     iCare: A Population Management Tool

Description: This is an intensive three day hands-on training on the iCare population management software. This course is designed to teach participants about the unique features and functionalities of iCare that include Care Management Event Tracking [CMET], HIV Management System, Meaningful Use, and Improved Patient Care. Participants will learn how to identify groups of patients who share user-defined characteristics [eg. Age, Diagnosis, Community, Scheduled Eye Clinic Appointments, Women’s Health Visits, Patients Assigned to a Provider, etc.] and create panels [patient lists] based on user definitions. Participants will customize their panel layouts, settings, and views of diverse patient data to identify care needs and manage and track clinical reminders and National Performance Measures. Tracking progress toward meeting meaningful use Performance and CQ measures for eligible providers and hospitals will be demonstrated. Additionally participants will learn how to use the CMET functions to electronically track and manage certain pre-defined events related to breast, cervical, colon, and skeletal health. Hands-on practice includes, but is not limited to: creating iCare panels based on a variety of clinical scenarios setting up user preferences, site parameters, and user access creating multiple layout templates entering and editing patient data in the patient record batch processing normal pap smears and mammogram screenings adding TIU notes utilizing iCare function buttons targeting care needs for populations and individual patients tracking the incidence of communicable diseases and suicidal behaviors identifying unmet performance measures at the provider and facility level creating IPC micro-systems viewing and uploading data to IPC Portal. The training consists of lecture, demonstration of the tool, and hands-on exercises utilizing individual computer terminals for each student and a simulated training database.

Description: Audience: Newly-hired PCC Data Entry Operators, other Operators without formal PCC training, and experienced Operators needing a refresher course or needing an update on new features of the PCC Data Entry System. Objectives: Students will learn about the Patient Care Component and its relational file structure. Students will learn to review a variety of PCC Encounter Forms and abstract appropriate data into the PCC utilizing some 100 data entry mnemonics. Students will learn ICD Coding skills and use of the PCC ICD Coding Tool. Students will learn how to display visits and produce health summaries to validate what they have entered. Students will learn how to modify and delete erroneous data. Students will learn how to merge and transfer data from multiple visits into the appropriate PCC visit record. Teaching Method: The course consists of a video presentation, lecture with handouts, and numerous computer hands-on exercises and practice sessions.

     QMAN/VGEN/Reporting

Description: Audience: Health care providers, facility and program administrators, medical records personnel, planners and epidemiologists, and information systems personnel. Length: 3 days. Hours: 8:30 - 4:30 daily. Objectives: Students will be able to formulate and execute ad hoc searches of the PCC database to produce lists of patients with various medical conditions and patients with important service needs such as immunizations, pap smears, health education, and specialty care. Students will learn to produce age distributions, custom letters, and mailing labels for patients selected in ad hoc searches. Students will learn to select and execute reports for facility and program management, quality assurance, workload statistics, and community epidemiology. In addition, students will learn to capture or store files of PCC data and export those files to Excel. Teaching Method: The course consists of two sections: QMan, the PCC Ad Hoc Query tool and PCC Management Reports with a focus on using VGEN for ad hoc reporting and exporting data to PC based programs such as Excel. Each section consists of lecture with overheads, demonstration of the tool, and hands-on exercises utilizing individual computer terminals for each student and a simulated patient database.

Description: This course is for Radiology Technicians or Technologists who will be using Radiology 5.0 or those who are assigned responsibility for ensuring that the Radiology Package functions correctly at their healthcare facility. The course will cover menu options for requesting procedures, registering patients for radiology procedures, editing exams after the procedure is completed, entering draft reports, verifying, and printing reports. The site-configurable options for setting up the Radiology package at a facility will be covered as will the linkages to PCC, the Women’s Health Package, EHR, and Third Party Billing. Objectives Document a Radiology procedure in RPMS beginning with a request for a procedure and ending with an exam in PCC and a claim in IHS Third Party Billing. Configure files for flashcards, reports, Radiology personnel, Radiology Division, Radiology Location, Exam Rooms, Film Sizes, Diagnostic Codes, Procedures, and Common Procedures. Set up default printers for Radiology Requests and Reports. Run workload reports as well as other Radiology reports for quality assurance and program management. Define the linkages to PCC, Third Party Billing, and Women’s Health. Perform basic troubleshooting using menu options for exam status tracking and patient profile. Intended Audience This class is suitable for Radiology Department staff and information systems personnel who will be assisting in initial set up of personnel, devices, files, and interfaces for Radiology Departments.
