Summary:

The geographic, cultural, and social diversity of Alaska provides unique challenges for dentists who are new to Alaska and the profession of dentistry. This course is designed to assist in the transition to this new environment by providing a fundamental knowledge base upon which to safely, effectively, and efficiently provide dental care to Alaska Native patients.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

1. Understand and discuss tribal and corporation relationships within the Alaska Native healthcare system; cultural issues that affect dental providers’ relationships with their patients; and unique health challenges that affect Alaska Native populations.

2. Provide principles of health promotion, disease prevention, and medical management and be able to interpret them relative to oral health.

3. Effectively manage pediatric patients and provide pediatric treatment, including stainless steel crowns and composite strip crowns.

4. Diagnose and treat endodontically involved teeth.

5. Demonstrate oral surgical diagnosis, suturing, and basic biopsy procedures.

Dentists practicing in Alaska for less than one year.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
