Summary:

This webinar is specifically developed for dental staff from IHS, tribal, and urban programs in the Oklahoma City, Bemidji, and Great Plains Areas.

Cultural diversity and competency are lifelong processes of self-awareness, attitudes, knowledge, and skills that are utilized on a daily basis. Understanding how these processes are delivered, one can enhance their ability to advocate for others through providing quality health care services, align health care systems, and abide by health care policies to improve health outcomes. This dental meeting will cover cultural competency and how it serves within a social determinant setting.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Understand the term cultural competence.
2. Understand the importance of cultural competence in the healthcare system.
3. Understand how culture impacts the healthcare system.
4.   Define unhoused population.
5.   List the number of health services provided to unhoused participants.
6.   Determine if Lawton Indian Hospital, Dental accomplished their goal of number of participants received health care service.

The speakers have no conflicts of interest to report. Tonia is a Veteran of the Gulf War Era and Peacetime. She graduated as President of her 2002 senior dental hygiene class with a dental hygiene degree from Old Dominion University with continuing course work from The Ohio State University. She received her Master’s in Business Administration and Master’s in Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix. She continues to be actively involved in leadership and advocacy as President of the National Dental Hygienists’ Association and is treasurer of The Greater Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Society. Tonia practices part-time as an oral health practitioner in private practice in Columbus, Ohio, and in the corporate world as a Health and Well-being Coach/Consultant, with foundation certification from Duke University and training through WellCoaches School of Coaching. Tonia is the Founder of Well-being I Am, LLC, facilitating an evidence-based forum on health. She is on a mission to bring awareness to whole health promotion through integration and is passionate about ensuring vulnerable communities have access to standard dental care and health education while taking a stand on the advancement and autonomy of the dental hygiene profession. Rebecca Niedo is an advanced expanded functions dental assistant at the Lawton Indian Hospital. She has been a dental assistant for 16 years. She graduated from Platt College with a Dental Assisting Certificate. She recently graduated from the 2023 Community Dental Health Coordinator program, a collaboration between the American Dental Assistant Association and the Indian Health Service. Candace Williams is a dental assistant supervisor at the Lawton Indian Hospital. She has 12 years of dental assisting experience. Candace has a bachelor’s of science in Healthcare Administration and Ethics from Mid-America Christian University. Candace is currently participating in the CDHC program. Both assistants are proud mothers and enjoy being dental advocates for their community, such as helping patients receive the dental care they need.

ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Concerns or complaints about a CE provider may be directed to the IHS at IHS CDE Coordinator or to the Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition at CCEPR.ada.org

Participants should be dental staff from IHS, tribal, and urban programs in the Oklahoma City, Bemidji, and Great Plains Areas.

Tuition Payment Information:

Please Make Checks Payable to: Indian Health Service.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
