Identifier Standards

HIPAA established a standard for unique national provider, employer and health plan identifiers and requirements concerning their use by health plans, healthcare clearing houses, and healthcare providers.

Privacy Standards

The HIPAA Privacy Standards are intended to protect the privacy of all individually identifiable health information created or held by covered entities, regardless of whether it is or ever has been in electronic form.

Security Standards

The HIPAA Security Standards must be applied by health plans, health care clearinghouses, and health care providers to all health information that is maintained or transmitted electronically.

Transactions and Code Sets Standards Implementation Strategy

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) made this decision based on surveys that demonstrated that the majority healthcare providers were not ready to carry out transactions using HIPAA compliant electronic transactions.
