Direct Service Tribes

Direct Service Tribes (DST) are Tribal Nations that receive primary health care services directly from IHS-operated hospitals and clinics, rather than operating those services under a self-determination contract or self-governance agreement.  The Office of Tribal and Urban Affairs provides leadership and advocacy on DST issues and coordinates with Tribal leaders through the Direct Service Tribes Advisory Committee (DSTAC).

While some Tribes operate exclusively under a Direct Service model, others operate under a mixed service delivery arrangement that includes both IHS-operated and tribally operated programs.
