Under the supervision of Behavioral Health Director, assume the overall responsibility for coordinating the psychiatric services of the outpatient programs and the Residential Treatment Center. Perform medication assessment and review, administration, and approve and certify the diagnosis of clients seen at Behavioral Health. Train clinical staff in DSM-V and in pertinent areas that are deemed appropriate according to the accreditation commission and Indian Health Services (IHS) guidelines. Deliver services to the tribal community in a culturally appropriate and sensitive manner. All Behavioral Health staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws. This position is contractual.
Duties: Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Maintain a system of records in accordance with the established standards of the Behavioral Health Program, IHS guidelines and other guideline contracts. • Meet with clinical team program coordinators and provide direct supervision with the Behavioral Health team for the purpose of presenting cases utilizing multi-disciplinary strategies. • Function as a member of the clinical team in accordance with appropriate policies and procedures in the tribal behavioral health setting. • Participate and collaborate with the medical staff and attending physicians at Nimkee Clinic in coordinating case services that involve mutual patients in both areas of treatment. • Provide signature and chart review for clinical staff. • Provide on-call services with after-hours residential nursing, or clinical staff. • Participate in workshops, meetings, and conferences as approved by the Behavioral Health Administrator. • Represent the Behavioral Health Program to the community in such a way that a sense of confidence is fostered that represents privacy and professionalism. • Assist with emergency psychiatric hospitalizations as needed. • Report all suspected abuse and neglect as mandated by the State of Michigan and Tribal Social Services. • Develop an understanding in practice of accreditation commission standards and utilize in daily case management. • Assist in the development of Behavioral Health Policies and Procedures in the practice of medication reviews and psychotropic medication guidelines. • Evaluate patient progress or lack of and serve as a member of utilization review to monitor changes required for patients at risk. • Serve as a tribal representative for behavioral health regarding competency hearings held when hearings are requested by the Tribal Court Chief Judge or Assistant Judge. • Adhere to patient confidentiality and comply with clinic policies and federal regulations under the Privacy rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority. • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times. • The above duties and responsibilities are not an all-inclusive list but rather a general representation of the duties and responsibilities associated with this position. Contacts/Purpose of Contacts: • Contact with tribal youth, adults, families, the general public, social services, court or legal systems and other agencies and providers deemed appropriate to accomplish effective services and treatment exercising discretion and judgment.
Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: • Medical degree. • Licensed Psychiatrist with a license in the State of Michigan and Board Certified. • Three years' experience as a director of psychiatric services. • Experience in working collaboratively across multiple organizations and community systems. • Excellent communication and computer skills. • Must be available on-call for emergencies. • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position. License, Certification, or Special Requirements: • Obtain HIPAA certification within five business days of hire. • Native American preference shall apply to all positions. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Knowledge and experience in psychiatric procedures and standards of care. • Knowledge of, and sensitivity to, cultural and language differences. • Knowledge of strong work ethics in the workplace. • Knowledge of basic computer skills, e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. • Skill in effectively and safely prescribing and monitoring effects of psychotropic medications. • Skill in provision of psychiatric evaluations with high level of diagnostic skills. • Ability to provide effective comprehensive psychiatric care for patients across a full range of clinical scenarios. • Ability to review and guide the work of others. • Ability to build rapport quickly and effectively with clients and their families. • Ability to integrate training, experience, and common sense sufficient to identify potentially dangerous situations to resolve the situation with minimum injury to self or other persons. • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels. • Ability to represent organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence in the community. • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials. • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Physical Demands: • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment. • Required to sit for extended periods of time and occasionally walk and stand. • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear. • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Work Environment: • Normal office, community and residential treatment center environment. • High stress level as associated with the demands of crisis interventions and emergencies is encountered as a result of challenges in the behavioral health field. • High incidence of exposure to communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens. • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required. • Travel may be required.
