Tuba City Regional Health Care Corp is located in the unique community of Tuba City, AZ and offers a culturally rich environment. We provide healthcare services to Native American tribes located in the area (Navajo, Hopi, and Southern Paiute). This mixture along with Anglo, Hispanic, and African American employees of the hospital and school systems make a pleasantly diverse community The Pre-Operative Registered Nurse (Pre-Op RN) provides pre-operative education to the surgical patients; ensures the surgical patient comprehends all education, pre-operative care planning, and expected outcomes of the planned procedure. The incumbent is responsible for all Nursing assessments, documentation and coordinates care plan with the Case Management team; delegates to Medical Support Assistant (MSA) as necessary. Additional duties include: completion of the medication reconciliation, assembly of the surgical documentation, direct patient care (i.e., monitoring, medication administration, physical assessment, pre & post-operative teaching, initiation of IV, documentation, and patient transport.) |
Duties: | 1. Obtains pertinent patient information that may include EKG's, laboratory results, current medication list, past medical and surgical history; ensures all required documentation (i.e. Informed Consent with all required signatures, Medical risk assessment, Advance Directives or Power of Attorney form) is completed prior to day of surgery. 2. Directs and assists patient to appropriate departments to complete pre-op testing. Follows up with patient to ensure all pre-op testing requirements are completed. Instructs patients to call Short Stay Surgery the day prior to scheduled procedure. Ensures patient and family are made aware of Short Stay Surgery Call Back times. Initiates and coordinates transport for the surgical patient. May be required to draw ordered lab tests or perform EKGs. 3. Ensures timely and consistent communication with Short Stay Surgery (SSS) and the Operating Room (OR) personnel of additional testing required on the day of the procedure. 4. Identifies and assesses teaching needs for each individual patient and their family to include the operative procedure, expected outcomes for the perioperative period and any follow up needs; elicits the aid of an interpreter if necessary. 5. Screens patient for potential risk factors, patient readiness for surgery, and potential anesthesia risks reporting to surgeon and anesthesia as appropriate. Utilizes the established anesthesia preoperative guidelines and may confer with Anesthesia or the surgeon when necessary. Reviews pre-op testing results and reports abnormal findings to surgeon and/or anesthesia. 6. Coordinates appropriate patient referrals which may include Physical Therapy, Case Management, Public Health Nursing, Discharge Coordinator, Social Services, Durable Medical Equipment, transportation, etc. 7. Develops reports, performance improvement projects, identifies and reports patient process and patient safety concerns in a timely manner. Create and maintain Pre Op spreadsheet. Instructs the MSA to locate laboratory and other diagnostic results, obtain and disseminate faxed reports as needed. 8. Monitors and records physical location and flow of all patients within the operating room area, surgical suites, cystoscopy and post anesthesia care unit. Maintains schedule/control board within the Operating Room area to accurately reflect case progression and patient arrivals at the direction of the OR Charge Nurse and Anesthesia Supervisor. 9. Utilizes established Outpatient daily Shift report, monthly statistical report and delegation of Authority to ensure appropriate coverage during absences. Coordinates the disposition of overnight and/unassigned patients with the bed control officer. 10. Maintains the order and appearance of public areas (nurse's station, patient areas, etc). Notifies support services when there are issues related to housekeeping or facilities maintenance. Follows-up on identified issues and assures action is taken. Demonstrates a professional and customer-oriented appearance and demeanor at all times 11. Performs other duties as Assigned. |
Qualifications: | Education: Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Certifications: * A valid, current, full and unrestricted Professional Nursing License to practice nursing in any state of the United States of America, The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States * Must maintain and have a current valid BLS, ACLS, PALS Certification Experience: Must have five (5) years of progressive RN experience with one year in the Preoperative and/or Operating Room setting |
