Summary: |
Maniilaq Health Center is a modern, 17-bed 88,000 sq. ft facility with inpatient, ER, urgent care, and outpatient facilities. Dental, lab, radiology, pharmacy and long-term care facility are also on site. A non-profit corporation, Maniilaq provides health, tribal and social services to approximately 8,000 residents in Northwest Alaska. Responsible for nutritional needs assessment, medical nutrition therapy and nutrition education for Maniilaq Heath Center inpatients and outpatients referred by health care providers. Primary responsibility is to work collaboratively with the Maniilaq Association Diabetes Program to ensure that all patients diagnosed with Diabetes receive appropriate medical nutrition therapy and nutrition intervention. Develops diabetes prevention activities. Assesses the nutritional needs of patient and makes nutrition recommendations to other professionals. Trains health professionals in nutritional assessment and medical nutrition therapy upon request. Serves as a professional resources for services related to nutritional assessment, medical nutrition therapy, menu development, diabetes education and patient nutrition education. |
Duties: | 1. Works collaboratively with the Maniilaq Association Diabetes Program to ensure that patients diagnosed with Diabetes receive appropriate nutrition intervention and medical nutrition therapy and intervention. Also, is involved in the development of diabetes awareness and prevention activities including participation at health fairs and Diabetes Program sponsored events in the community. 2. Ensures that nutrition assessments are completed for all inpatients as well as outpatients referred by health care providers. 3. Develops, implements and reevaluates nutrition care plans and educates patience and family on nutrition issues. 4. Participates in multi-disciplinary patient care meetings. Provides training and advice to professional staff at Maniilaq Health Care and village community clinics on nutritional assessment, medical nutrition therapy, diabetes education and nutrition education. 5. Prepares and submits data as required by the nutrition and Diabetes departments. 6. Teaches classes specific to diabetes, prenatal nutrition, breastfeeding, infant nutrition, child nutrition as well as nutrition and aging. 7. Communicates with Food Service Managers regarding food service issues and provides technical advice and in-services as needed. 8. In absence of contracted food service Registered Dietitian acts in an advisory role in preparation and contents of therapeutic diets. 9. Travels to the villages to provide diabetes education, medical nutrition therapy and nutrition education. 10. May be called for emergency and non-routine dietary consultation after regular work hours. 11. May provide nutrition education for other Maniilaq Association programs or community organizations upon request. 12. May perform WIC duties in absence of WIC Program Manager. 13. May perform additional duties assigned by Diabetes Program Manager or Health Center Administrator |
Qualifications: | Registered Dietitian (RD) with the American Dietetic Association required. CDE desirable. Understands the developmental needs of all patients throughout the continuum of life and disease states and is able to adjust care to meet patient's needs. Ability to use the computer to assist with workload. Ability to perform with minimal supervision. Good communication and patient care skills. Ability to work in a cross-cultural setting in rural Native Alaskan communities. |
