Shiprock – UNM Family Medicine Residency
At the SUNM Family Medicine Residency Program, we train family physicians to work rurally and beyond. Established in 2021, we are the first federal Indian Health Service (IHS) residency program in the country, and the only residency located on Navajo Nation (Diné Bikéyah), serving the Diné and other tribal members.
MISSION
To collaborate with our community in creating excellent family physicians with the skills to work in any setting.
AIMS
- To train the next generation of rural family physicians to provide medical care through all stages of life.
- To model comprehensive and culturally appropriate patient, family, and community-centered care.
- To support the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of our community.
- To cultivate lifelong teachers and learners.
