DE0466: Diabetes Online CDE: A Child’s Definition of Health: “To Not Have Diabetes” Why Breastfeeding Support is a Shared Responsibility
Native communities across the nation are working hard to ensure healthy diabetes-free youth and families. Medical providers can effectively reach community health goals by relying on community strengths and upholding community values. Breastfeeding is one of the most essential Native traditions that brings cultural beliefs, mother’s love, food sovereignty, and science together into an evidence-based intervention that reduces risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
This session will first review how social determinants of health and epigenetics impact our communities and how the benefits of breastfeeding are essential for overcoming health disparities. Then, strategies from the Zuni Breastfeeding Coalition will be shared, with focus on common barriers to breastfeeding and simple ways to support baby friendly practices.
1. Describe benefits of breastfeeding along with barriers to breastfeeding.
2. Implement ways to enhance breastfeeding education and support for new mothers to help prevent early problems.
3. Create supportive a breastfeeding environment that naturally promotes breastfeeding and increases the rate of exclusive breastfeeding.

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
