Dramatic progress has been made in reducing suffering from tooth decay. Silver fluoride and glass ionomer are now the cornerstones for controlling cavities. Proper phasing can overcome concerns about SDF-stain. The Hall crown technique is unbeaten in simplicity and effectiveness. These treatments are bolstered by other options such as iodine, xylitol, and good old fashioned fluoride toothpaste. But nothing is as effective as returning the diet to traditional indigenous cuisine.
In this two session course, we will dive into the revolution in non-invasive techniques to protect vulnerable populations dental caries. We will ensure that all dental team members understand the principles, know where to find the evidence, and can support the clinicians who will be able to perform the techniques.

Learning Objectives:

Session 1: [Treatment]: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1.   Lead a conversation with a patient or parent about cavity treatment without needles or drills.
2.   Use silver fluoride to reduce the need for tooth preparation.
3.   Apply glass ionomer as a long-term therapeutic restoration.

Session 2: [Prevention] Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1.   Use povidone iodine to prevent tooth decay.
2.   Apply glass ionomer as a sealant.
3.   Lead a conversation with a patient or parent to establish nutrition goals for managing tooth decay.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
