Summary:

The Monthly IHS CDE Webinars are available to all IHS, tribal, and urban dental program staff [dentists, dental hygienists, dental health aide therapists, community dental health coordinators, expanded function dental assistants, dental assistants, and dental health aides].

OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens standard [29 CFR 1910.1030] as amended pursuant to the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000, prescribes safeguards to protect workers against the health hazards caused by bloodborne pathogens. Its requirements address items such as exposure control plans, universal precautions, engineering and work practice controls, personal protective equipment, housekeeping, laboratories, hepatitis B vaccination, post-exposure follow-up, hazard communication and training, and recordkeeping. The standard places requirements on employers whose workers can be reasonably anticipated to contact blood or other potentially infectious materials [OPIM], such as unfixed human tissues and certain body fluids.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this webinar, course participants should be able to:
1.   Understand basic concepts of sharps safety;
2.   Describe safe injection methods; and
3.   List top OSHA findings related to sharps safety.

Dr. Damon Pope currently serves as the EDR Deputy Director, the IHS DOH National Infection Control Consultant with the Indian Health Service [IHS] Division of Oral Health [DOH], and Continuing Dental Education Co-Coordinator. Dr. Damon Pope received his Doctor of Dental Medicine [DMD] from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. After dental school, Dr. Pope joined the Air Force and furthered his education by completing an Advanced Education of General Dentistry residency at Scott Air Force Base. He also completed an Advanced Clinical Dentistry Preceptorship at Ellsworth Air Force Base. He continued to serve in the Air Force four years before joining the IHS team at the Crow Service Unit as a Chief Dental Officer [CDO]. After serving three years at the Crow Service Unit, Dr. Pope transferred to the Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center and served as the CDO for over five years. Dr. Pope was asked to be the IHS DOH National Dental Infection Control Consultant in 2017. He currently leads the twelve member IHS DOH National Infection Control and Prevention Committee. In 2021, Dr. Pope was detailed to IHS DOH focus his efforts on helping clinics overcome the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
