Summary:

The purpose of the course in intravenous moderate sedation in the dental office is threefold. First, the dentist will be prepared to deliver intravenous moderate sedation in the dental department at Zuni PHS Hospital. Second, dentists who complete the course will be able to become credentialed by medical staff to deliver intravenous moderate sedation. Third, the course will comply with state board requirements for licensure in intravenous moderate sedation. This course will cover 1] Basic physiology and pre-operative assessment; 2] Pharmacology, local anesthetics, opioid and non-opioid analgesics; 3] Mild sedation [anxiolysis], nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation, and oral sedation; 4] Intravenous moderate sedation, venipuncture, and patient monitoring; 5] Cardiac monitoring and rhythms; 6] Emergencies and complications. A test will be administered at the completion of each section and a final exam will be delivered upon completion of the course. Sixty units of continuing education credit will be given upon completion of the course [10 units/section]. In addition, dentists must complete a rotation of at least two weeks in anesthesiology and will have the option to complete an additional two weeks in anesthesiology or two weeks in an oral surgery office utilizing intravenous sedation; dentists must be BLS and ACLS certified; and dentists must deliver intravenous moderate sedation to twenty patients.

Learning Objectives:

Session 1
Upon completion of session one, the dentist will understand basic physiology as it pertains to intravenous moderate sedation and will be able to complete a pre-operative assessment.
Session 2
Upon completion of session two, the dentist will understand pharmacology in relation to intravenous moderate sedation. In addition, the dentist will be able to explain local anesthetic action and calculation of anesthetic dosages. Finally, the dentist will understand the physiology of opioid and non-opioid analgesics, analgesic precautions and contraindications, and the selection of appropriate dosages and types of analgesics.
Session 3
Upon completion of session three, the dentist will be able to identify appropriate agents for mild sedation [anxiolysis]. The dentist will understand the physiology of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation and oral sedation. The dentist will demonstrate appropriate set-up and delivery of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation. In addition the dentist will be able to select an appropriate agent for oral sedation. In addition, the dentist will demonstrate appropriate monitoring of patients receiving mild sedation and be able to appropriately identify precautions and contraindications to the use of either nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation or oral sedatives.
Session 4
Upon completion of session four, the dentist will be able to set-up the operatory and prepare the patient for intravenous sedation and appropriately monitor the patient receiving intravenous moderate sedation. The dentist will demonstrate proper venipuncture technique and site selection. In addition, the dentist will be able to identify appropriate agents used in intravenous moderate sedation, the physiology and precautions/contraindications of each agent, and the use of multiple agents.
Session 5
Upon completion of session five, the dentist will be able to identify normal ECG rhythms and abnormal ECG rhythms.
Session 6
Upon completion of session six, the dentist will be able to recognize medical emergencies and appropriately treat medical emergencies and complications associated with mild sedation and intravenous moderate sedation.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
