Dental Services

Great Plains Area currently has 21 dental programs and will soon be expanding. This number includes six programs located within hospitals; the remainder being housed in health centers. There is mix of federal and tribally run facilities in Great Plains where program locations vary from rural to urban. Basic services such as preventative, emergency, restorative, oral surgery and pediatric dentistry are emphasized although a limited amount of endodontics, periodontics and prosthetics are also offered. Oral health in the Great Plains Area presents many challenges such as adults with multiple co-morbidities and a high rate of early childhood caries, however, Great Plains programs are growing and it is an exciting time to be involved in oral health!

Mobile Women's Health Unit

The Great Plains Area Mobile Mammography Unit increases access to screening mammography for Native American/Alaska Native Women residing in North and South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska by providing services at their local community. The mobile unit is fully accredited for digital mammography by the FDA and ACR.

About the Mobile Clinic

The mobile unit has a small waiting area, a mammography suite with dressing room and digital mammography suite. On average, the mobile mammography unit provides screening mammograms to an average of 15-25 women per day. The images are transmitted to a radiology group certified in interpreting mammography images. The reports are sent to the woman's primary care provider at an IHS facility for determination of follow-up screening and care.

Early screening and detection of breast abnormalities decreases the morbidity and mortality of breast diseases and cancer.
