The purpose of this web site is to assist Indian Health Service (IHS) employees in dealing with their Privacy Act duties, responsibilities and obligations. It is designed to serve as a basic resource for Privacy Act information, guidelines and procedures. Within IHS, patient medical records constitute the majority of agency Privacy Act-protected records.

The site is designed in a question and answer format to provide an overview of the Privacy Act and how it relates to the IHS patient medical records. Throughout the site, links provide easy access to more detailed information and/or sample forms and formats.

The HIPAA final standards for electronic health care transactions, and for code sets, adopts the NCPDP Telecommunication Standard Format, Version 5.1 and the NCPDP Batch Standard, Version 1 Release 0 for pharmacy claims. Health plans, health care clearinghouses and health care providers who utilize electronic transactions will be required to use these standards beginning October 16, 2002.
