PATH EHR

PATH EHR

Indian Health Service (IHS) Division of Health Information Technology Modernization and Operations (DHITMO) named the new electronic health record (EHR): PATH EHR.

In March 2026, the Indian Health Service reached an important milestone in building the PATH EHR. Key parts of the system are now finished and ready to use. These completed parts are no longer being built, so the team can focus on finishing the remaining features and creating training materials to help staff learn how to use the system.

The Four Directions Warehouse (4DW) has received its Authority to Operate and will serve as the enterprise archive for legacy and ongoing patient health data. It will support PATH EHR users by providing access to historical patient records and ensuring compliance with federal data retention requirements. This solution will make patient historical records readily accessible to health providers.

PATH stands for "Patients at the Heart," demonstrating our dedication to assisting individuals on their journey to healing, promoting empowerment, and advancing health and wellness in line with nature and community values. The PATH EHR reflects the vision statement of the Modernization Program, which aims to "Provide the best possible EHR, managed by its users, for its users, to drive high-quality health care through sustainable, modern, and easy-to-use tools." The Indian Health Service (IHS) recognizes that the naming of the EHR solution must keep our patients at the center of not only the EHR solution but the Program itself. As for the emblem, it symbolizes the significance of community guidance, regional connection, and holistic well-being.

EHR Solution Selection

The IHS selected General Dynamics Information Technology, Inc. (GDIT) to build, configure, and maintain an enterprise EHR solution that uses Oracle Health technology. GDIT will:

  • Serve as a system integrator to pull together multiple aspects of the enterprise EHR solution
  • Manage a large team of subcontractors
  • Monitor that the new solution works with other hardware, software, and operational components at each site
  • Oracle Health will provide its enterprise EHR solution as a member of the GDIT team

GDIT was selected because they presented the strongest overall technical approach, demonstrated experience deploying complex information technology systems for the federal government, and showed a record of strong past performance. GDIT also offered a widely adopted enterprise EHR solution that was well-received by users who participated in scenario-based demonstrations.

Pilot Site Section

The Lawton Service Unit — including the Lawton Hospital, Anadarko Indian Health Center, and Carnegie Indian Health Center — is the pilot site for implementing PATH EHR.

Lawton Service Unit

The IHS pilot site is the facility selected to support the initial buildout of PATH EHR. This site will implement the functionality, usability, and compatibility of PATH EHR in a real-world health care environment before it is rolled out on a larger scale. This will allow the IHS to identify and address any issues, refine the solution, ensure patient safety, and gather feedback to improve its implementation for other health care facilities in the future.

The Health IT Modernization Program works closely with the Lawton Service Unit to test and implement PATH EHR  in preparation for go-live in August 2026. Once the pilot phase is complete, the Program then looks forward to working with federal, tribal, and urban Indian facilities in future cohort implementations of PATH EHR around the country.
