DE0011: Cultural Competency Curriculum for Disaster Preparedness and Crisis Response
In the wake of recent disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and the Homeland Security Presidential Directive [HSPD-21], emergency preparedness and disaster and crisis response have gained national recognition and significance. This course is designed to equip disaster and crisis volunteers and personnel with the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services to diverse communities during all phases of disaster. The course is grounded in the Office of Minority Health's [OMH] CLAS Standards, which are grouped into three themes: Culturally Competent Care, Language Access Services, and Organizational Supports.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
1. Discuss issues related to cultural competency in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
2. Identify strategies to promote self-awareness about attitudes, beliefs, biases, and behaviors that may influence the disaster services they provide.
3. Devise strategies to enhance skills toward the provision of culturally and linguistically competent care in disaster situations.
4. Demonstrate the advantages of the adoption of the CLAS Standards as appropriate in their emergency services.

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
