This presentation will provide an overview of the impact of hypoglycemia, the risk factors for hypoglycemia and/or harm from hypoglycemia and what efforts are needed for preventing and treating hypoglycemia in patients on insulin and/or sulfonylureas. The session will include a discussion of the frequency with which hypoglycemia occurs, the risk factors providers need to be aware of, and the morbidity and mortality associated with hypoglycemia. A risk assessment tool for helping assess whether a patient is experiencing hypoglycemia will be provided. Signs, symptoms, and treatment of mild, moderate, and severe hypoglycemia will be addressed. Collaborating with patients to set realistic blood sugar goals to avoid hypoglycemia will also be discussed.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Outline the signs and symptoms and treatment for mild, moderate and severe hypoglycemia.
2. Describe pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic risk factors for hypoglycemia.
3. Work collaboratively with patients with type 2 diabetes to share in decisions about therapy and treatment goals.

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
