DE0314: Diabetes Online CDE: Engaging Partners to Address Food Access
The food system on Navajo Nation has been shaped by a complex history that has led to its current USDA designation/classification as a food desert. This session will include a discussion of how community partners including community members, public, private and non-profit organizations are working collectively and powerfully in Shiprock, New Mexico to improve access to healthy food and water, and to promote food systems change. Information on how other communities can build local, diverse partnerships to improve health and food access, and how clinical settings can implement strategies to support patients experiencing food insecurity will be shared. The training will also include strategies for supporting food insecure patients.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Summarize current information about the effects of food insecurity on health and health outcomes.
2. Identify and utilize screening tools to assess food insecurity in persons with diabetes, as well as, other community members.
3. Describe approaches for increasing access to healthy foods in rural and/or tribal communities.

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
